Surely on more than one occasion you have heard about the term “sisterhood” so widely used within feminism; Unfortunately this concept is still unknown to many despite its importance. The pillars of feminism are based on sisterhood, regardless of the feminist side. Without the assumption of this concept, feminism has little to do today.
Provine sisterhood concept of the word sor, which means sister; Sisterhood, then, refers to the sisterhood of women, to a union of these in regard to gender aspects.
For example, sisterhood is being aware of a sexist case and having the need to interfere because this could happen to you or to any woman ; Sorority is support, solidarity and coexistence between women to face all the social problems that women suffer for the simple fact of being women.
In a world where patriarchy is still the basis of all human behavior and attitudes, sisterhood and the alliance between women are born to stay strong. Sisterhood between women is important so that none of us feel alone due to the structural violence we suffer in our daily lives.
The importance of sisterhood among women
But, to what extent is sisterhood necessary? Why do we not refer, in the same way, to solidarity between men, to brotherhood between them?
It is much simpler than you think, it is enough to analyze typical Hollywood movies to get an idea. Cinema is representative of today’s society, in the same way that society ends up feeding on cinema.
There are many cases in which we need sisterhood between women: men are very clear about it –except for some cases- their friendship comes before any other issue; But women have always been taught to be rivals and to compete with each other. This hurts us a lot.
What we have mentioned does not happen thanks to divine nature, women do not fight among ourselves because of biological determinants , but we do it because that is what the patriarchal society has instilled in us: Our individual objective has always been to be above the other, without have group conscience as a woman. This is not really the case, and sisterhood is essential to understand it.
Sorority is not helping without distinctions
Although the term sisterhood refers to mutual support between women, this does not mean that we have to support everything that other women say , regardless of what they express.
When a woman has a more favored position she mutates the voices of those who are in a less privileged echelon, it is normal that this does not happen and we communicate it in order to make it understood that not everything is allowed .
For example, when famous women release wonderful phrases like “neither machismo nor feminism, I vote for equality”, it is normal for women who are in the fight for feminism to discover these flaws in the speeches of others. Of course, it is important to do it without falling into insults or attacking the other person due to lack of knowledge.
