Not only is Adidas one of the best running shoe manufacturers, but the German brand can also produce some pretty competent trail running shoes. The Terrex sub-brand has been a fan favorite among trail runners and hikers for several years now and the Adidas Terrex Speed LD is a good example of why.
They are among the best trail running shoes and offer excellent traction, a comfortable upper and no less good looks at a reasonable price.
Are they good trail running shoes? Most notable features
There are three Adidas Terrex Speed shoes available: the standard Speed is the lightest of the latest Terrex trail running shoes and weighs just 225/210 grams (men / women). The Speed GTX model is heavier, more expensive, and also waterproof, so if you like to splash in puddles, the GTX version will work better for you.
And finally, there is the Adidas Terrex Speed LD which, according to the brand, is " made for those who just want to go fast and climb mountains with high performance ". The Speed LDs are in the goldilocks zone among the other Speed models: it is stronger and provides more traction than the Speed, but it is also cheaper and more flexible than the Speed GTX.
What really makes the Terrex Speed LD shine is the Continental rubber outsole that provides superior grip on all surfaces. The technical studs adhere to the ground to ensure a secure footing even on wet and slippery terrain. The three cuts on the sole help reduce weight without compromising grip efficiency.
Turning the Adidas Terrex Speed LD upside down, you'll find the abrasion-resistant mesh upper. The integrated gusseted tongue protects your feet but also allows air to flow in and out of the shoes to improve comfort and reduce swelling even after running longer distances.
Both the medial and lateral sides have a reinforced section that holds the laces. The heel area is also supported by a firmer heel , although not too firm, as that could force the heel in the wrong direction when landing on an unexpectedly uneven surface.
So in our opinion, while the Adidas Terrex Speed LD have a good amount of cushioning, the midsole can feel a bit firm for untrained feet. This is probably necessary to protect the sole from rocks and other sharp objects on the ground, but it still won't make the break-in period any more enjoyable.
