This is the reason that prevents children from eating honey

We may or may not know, but minors cannot eat honey. The reason is clear and we come to explain it here. It is a food rich in vitamins that helps our body in many functions, and we can all eat it, although it is not considered vegan.

Honey usually comes to the fore every so often and there is a lot of confusion with it. There are the detractors who hate this product, and there are those who love this food and use it almost every day in their desserts. The problem that there is currently with honey is that there are only artificial honeys and very few of those that are within our reach are real. This is why we always recommend reading the labels, also as an extra trick, pure honey is thick and would not fall if we grab it with a finger.

Returning to the topic of children, it sounds a bit contradictory, since honey has properties that help the development and growth of minors, and even helps in catarrhal processes, just like us adults, therefore … what do they prevents eating it?

The answer is botulism , a disease that comes from Clostridium botulinum and is found in spoiled foods such as sausages and preserves, but also appears in honey. Knowing this, the question is, why doesn’t it affect adults? and the other big question, why are there baby cereals with honey?

Honey is prohibited until 12 months

The reason why children under 1 year of age cannot eat honey is because it may contain spores of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. These spores travel throughout the child’s digestive system and lodge in the intestine, where they release the toxin and paralyze the baby’s muscles. It is a serious situation that must be treated immediately in a hospital.

Some of the symptoms of infant botulism are: constipation, slowed breathing, weakened sucking, paralysis, respiratory failure , weak crying, lightheadedness, semi-closed eyes, lack of reflexes, loss of control of your head, etc.

Adults are not affected by eating honey, since botulism occurs mainly in children between 6 weeks and 6 months of age . This is why it is recommended not to give this type of food to children under one year of age (according to WHO). What’s more, many experts recommend not offering food that may be in poor condition or even dry stick honey before 6 years of age.

So why are there honey cereals for kids? Well, very simple. These cereals can be consumed because they have been treated at high temperatures, eliminating all traces of these possible and dangerous spores.

Now we know why we should not give this liquid gold to our children, nephews or minors that we have around us, no matter how much they insist on us when we see that we mix it with our pancakes, fruits or yogurts.
