What is Rosacea? Can it be Prevented?

Having perfect skin does not only depend on using cosmetics that take care of it or leading a healthy lifestyle. There are inexplicable reasons for some conditions in the dermis, as in the case of rosacea. Many people suffer from this skin problem, without knowing why or how they can prevent its appearance. Although it may resemble teenage acne in appearance, they are not related.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin disease that causes the face to have red parts, and sometimes look like acne. Currently, the causes that generate this problem are not known, but it is usually more present in women with sensitive skin, between 30 and 50 years old. Even so, it is committed to a combination of hereditary and environmental factors, and not due to lack of hygiene.

And, although the cause is not known, it is known that there are some factors that can aggravate rosacea by increasing blood flow on the surface of the skin. For example: spicy foods, hot drinks, sunlight, some drugs that dilate blood vessels, alcohol, or extreme temperatures.

What types are there?

The specialists Plewig and Kligman marked some stages of the disease:

  • Rosacea diathesis : so called when episodes of redness and flushing appear.
  • Stage I : state in which persistent erythema with telangiectasias arises.
  • Stage II : Papules and micropustules also appear.
  • Stage III : to all of the above, nodules are added.

However, it does not progress in the same way in all people, and it may happen that it explodes directly in stage II or III.

Regarding symptoms , patients with the disease have usually had a history of episodes of facial redness, especially in the central part of the face. There are those who also have pimples on the face, reminiscent of acne because they sometimes contain pus. Even, it is normal to feel the feet sensitive and warm.
It is estimated that half of people with rosacea also suffer from dry and irritated eyes, as well as swollen and red eyelids. And, on rare occasions, rosacea can thicken the skin of the nose and make it appear more voluminous.

Can it be prevented?

Since the cause of occurrence is not known, it is a little difficult to know the method to prevent rosacea from appearing. There are specialists who recommend avoiding hot meals as a preventive measure, as well as avoiding any triggering factor mentioned above.

To find out if you have this foot problem, it can be diagnosed through a physical examination by a specialist, in addition to studying your medical history. Currently there is no treatment that cures rosacea, but it can favor its reduction. Your doctor will determine if it is better to carry out a topical, systemic treatment, with CO2 laser or with intense pulsed light.
