These durable and sturdy bikes are made for riding on narrow dirt trails. They have wide, flat handlebars for good control; two-inch or wider tires with knobby tread for increased traction; and wide-range transmissions and hydraulic disc brakes to handle steep ups and downs. Wheels are typically between 27.5 and 29 inches in diameter. Women’s models are marked by women’s specific seats, smaller grips and narrower handlebars, and shorter cranks. Most also have a lighter suspension for smaller riders.
Mountain biking means many things to many people. Depending on the style, a mountain bike can be used for everything from unpaved roads to steep trails and goat trails. Consider your budget
Quality bikes start to hover between € 300-400. Many department store bikes you see for less are cheaply made, poorly assembled, and unsafe to ride. But a good bike will last, making it a long-term investment.
- € 300-500: Sturdy metal frame, rigid fork or basic front suspension, wide-range transmission (7 to 24-speed), rim brakes or cable-activated disc brakes
- € 500-1,000: Better front suspension, hydraulic disc brakes on some models, lighter rims and tires
- € 1,000-2,000 : lighter aluminum or carbon frames, better suspension, hydraulic disc brakes (except on some road bikes), even lighter rims and tires.
