7 yoga accessories that you can't miss if you want to level up

Unlike activities like swimming or CrossFit, yoga is a relatively minimal practice. You don't need a lot of material to flow, but if you want to improve your practice and improve some of your skills, having a few accessories, such as blocks and straps, can be helpful.

For example, blocks provide stability by holding postures for a longer period of time. They can also help you deepen a stretch when your flexibility or range of motion isn't there yet. And if you're doing restorative yoga, you could benefit from using a cushion or blanket for additional support.

The best accessories to progress in yoga

Yoga mat

Although you can fully flow on bare ground or grass, a mat can make things a lot more comfortable, especially for positions where sensitive joints, like the knees, are in direct contact with the ground.

The mats produce a pleasant scent that gives off aromatherapy vibrations and are free of harsh chemicals such as plastic by-products. Although cork rugs can be more expensive, they pay off in the long run.

Besides the composition of your mat, you should also consider the thickness. They do the double job of providing a more stable surface when you're practicing on something like a rug, but they also have extra padding for when you're kneeling on harder surfaces like hardwood floors.

Blocks

Blocks can help you access poses that you may not be able to adapt on your own. You can use yoga blocks to help with flexibility, stability, and support in a variety of poses.

For example, if you can't bring your hand to touch the ground in triangle pose, you can place a block on your higher side under your hand to help you deepen the stretch and maintain the pose.

Cork blocks are usually somewhat better than foam blocks because they provide more stability during practice. Cork blocks are also great substitutes for weights during strength or sculpture yoga classes.

However, foam blocks also have their place. Because they are softer than cork, foams can be especially helpful during restorative poses and for beginners with sensitive joints.

Strap or belt

Like blocks, yoga straps are primarily used to help yogis access positions that they cannot reach on their own. A strap can be used in a variety of ways to make challenging poses more accessible, especially for the shoulders, as well as for seated poses.

For example, when it is difficult to clasp your hands behind your back in a forward bend, hold a strap between them. The straps are also useful for yoga, twists, and hip and shoulder opening poses to relieve tension. It is one of the most practical accessories to have on hand.

It doesn't matter too much what your yoga straps are made of, just that they are durable enough to resist stretching. If you think you will use straps frequently, you can opt for sturdy woven nylon straps instead of cotton, which can wear out over time.

Yoga pillow or booster

A yoga booster profoundly improves relaxation postures and can also be used to support reclined and seated postures. If it is not in your budget to get one (or if you have space limitations), you can use a large pillow or a couple of pillows that you already have at home.

If you decide to buy a yoga pillow, you should pay attention to two main things: they have to offer a lot of support to align the spine and offer infinite comfort.

Blanket

The blankets are a supportive accessory for people who have knee problems. It is difficult for me to have my knee on the mat directly on the floor for long periods of time, or certain positions in which my knees are bent. Using a blanket adds just the right amount of support where I need it for those poses. Blankets are also great for covering yourself during Savasana (corpse pose).

Towel

For very sweaty yogis, a yoga towel can increase grip and prevent slipping (and your face on the ground).

Yoga towels absorb sweat quickly, in both heated and unheated yoga environments. A good towel doesn't move on the mat, so you don't have to worry about adjusting it every time you change position or move your feet.

Yoga mat bag

If you plan to practice yoga in a studio or in an outdoor location, such as a park, you may want something to carry your mat. Mats can be a bit awkward to carry without an accessory, especially if you have a heavier or denser mat.

A mat bag protects it from the outside elements if you travel with it frequently and face unpredictable weather. Bags also often have extra pockets for small belongings, like keys or your phone, so you don't have to carry a separate bag.
