Tips for celiac travelers

Possibly it makes you a world to plan a trip being celiac, and even more so if you have just been diagnosed. It is normal for you to take a while to catch the celiac disease trick and think that you will not be able to eat anything when you leave home (and not at home either). Do not panic!
Being celiac you should not take it as being sick. They detect this disease, whose solution is to follow a diet, is there any other disease with this piece of medicine?

You will surely go crazy thinking about what you are going to eat when you go 15 days to the beach or a weekend to the mountains. We are going to give you some tips to make planning easier.

Prepare the trip in time

It rarely occurs to us to go on a trip unexpectedly, unless it is for work, so we advise you to plan your trip calmly and inform yourself of your destination.

Take a look at the celiac disease association websites of your destination and, if necessary, contact them. They will be able to advise you on which restaurants, cafes or ice cream parlors contain gluten-free options.

In Spain, for example, McDonalds has a gluten-free variety of its products. But this does not happen in all countries; In Portugal they do not serve the hamburger on a special bread, you must settle for a salad and a broth.

Google your destination by putting the name followed by "gluten free" . Surely, several blogs will appear telling you about experiences in this gastronomic field.

Get hold of reservations

There is probably a time when you cannot find a restaurant with the guarantees you need or, simply, something unforeseen has arisen. Prepare a backpack (or bag) with a snack, cookies or any vacuum-packed food . Hunger can be very treacherous! This way you also make sure you don't waste time looking for a supermarket or a specialized store.

Identify yourself as celiac

If you are going to travel outside of Spain and they will not be able to understand your language, take a paper that explains your problem in the language of the city . FACE itself has some documents already written ( here and here ), which are not bad at all.

If you forget to have it written, you can always go to the mobile translator.

Better an apartment with a kitchen

This way you will eliminate any type of cross contamination . Many bars claim to have gluten-free options, but neglect the preparation of food (frying in the same oil or having contact with different breads).

This will also be an economic benefit, since buying food at the supermarket will be much cheaper than eating out.
