Is yogurt with fiber healthy?

On numerous occasions we have talked about the importance of drinking plain, unsweetened yogurt in our day-to-day life and we have mentioned the importance of probiotics and the benefits that yogurt, especially Greek-style yogurt, brings to the intestinal microbiota. Well, let’s see why yogurts with fiber are unnecessary and unhealthy.

Yogurts with fiber are one more lie on the current market, and that type of dairy products are loaded with sugars. Those same sugars then prevent the normal functioning of the intestines and damage the microbiota. Yogurts with fiber have always been marked as healthy, but the reality is quite different and in this text we will understand why.

Be very careful about advertising claims of cholesterol-lowering foods, meal replacement shakes, low-sugar foods that may contain unhealthy sweeteners, etc. Learning to read labels will free us from disappointment and save us a few bucks.

Stick to daily fiber

Taking a natural yogurt without sugar a day and adding a variety of seeds, roasted nuts without salt or fresh fruit is much more effective for those constipation processes than yogurts with fiber . Emphasis is always placed on a varied and healthy diet and one of the reasons is to regulate traffic.

Well, we cannot have a diet low in vegetables, fruits and with little hydration, and want to solve the deficiencies with fiber yogurts, artificial protein, vitamin supplements and such. Yogurts with fiber are usually a claim aimed at women who want to lose weight and eat healthy, but the reality is quite different.

A 2019 study published in the journal Nutrients found that yogurts with fiber were very low in fiber per 100 grams of product, yet almost 10% was just sugar. If we take that same amount of food and change it for lentils, chickpeas, beans, fruits, green vegetables, seeds, nuts, etc. the amount of fiber we get at the end of the day is much higher than what an average adult needs.

A healthy adult person needs an average of 25 to 30 grams of fiber per day . The excess of fiber is considered from 50 or 60 grams and the shortage of fiber is when it does not even reach 15 grams. With a balanced diet it is easy to reach 30 grams and there are even days that we can spend it and we will know that in a few minutes or a few hours due to abdominal distention, gas and even soft stools or diarrhea.

In the study that was published in the Nutrients magazine, it analyzed almost 900 different yogurts from all over the United Kingdom and the conclusion was that this claim is just advertising and is not 100% real. Something similar to what happens with Danacol or Actimel, in order for it to be truly effective, a series of habits must first be changed in our daily lives.
