Is it necessary to have yogurt with bifidus?

When we go to buy yogurts, we do not find the same panorama as when we go to buy eggs that there are only 3 or 4 different types to choose from, but we find ourselves in front of a huge and almost infinite linear. Today we want to highlight the yogurt with bifidus, does it really add something to the body?

To a greater or lesser extent, we all know what bifidus are or what they are for. Or at least what the industry has made us believe. In general, bifidus are millions of beneficial bacteria for our body that are added to food, such as yogurts with bifidus.

These are sold under the premise that “they are healthier than regular yogurts”. And here there is part of myth and part of reality. That is why we wanted to open the melon and tell why it is not necessary to buy yogurts with bifidus.

Yogurts with bifidus, yes or no?

Active bifidus, as it is known commercially, is an additive that is used with dairy products, especially yogurts, and promises that these bifidobacteria help our intestinal microbiota. In fact, that bifidus shares bacteria with our microbiota. That is, we are adding help, and when it comes to our health, all help is little, right? Well, it’s not going to be. Abusing probiotics is a bad idea.

In order for us to position ourselves better, the bacteria in our microbiota serve us for a multitude of things, among them to prevent us from falling ill, energy recovery, nutrient absorption, improve digestion in the intestine, control episodes of diarrhea, calm food allergies, prevent the formation of tumors in the colon, etc. Regarding energy, these bacteria absorb energy from organic matter that reaches our intestines.

These bacteria that are naturally in our colon (from the day we are born). By taking yogurts supplemented with more bifidus, it seems that we have gained in health, but they are simply an advertising claim to make the product more attractive and thus get more sales.

What does science say?

Well, there is no evidence that yogurts with active bifidus are better than a natural yogurt that, in turn, already has this type of healthy bacteria for our body. Yogurts and all fermented foods already have natural probiotics that are very beneficial for our body.

In addition, to make matters worse, science has no proof that these extra bacteria are useful and lodge in our intestines, much less, that they help us on a day-to-day basis. Quite the opposite of what is seen in advertising.

Therefore, it is in our hands whether to decide between a yogurt with bifidus, or a natural yogurt (without sugar). We recommend the Greek yogurt variety, as they are low in sugar, low in fat, tastier and creamier, and more versatile. We can use them in smoothies, with cereals, fruits and even to cook sauces, there are vegetables and cow’s milk.
