Glyphosate: what it is, what foods contain it and its danger to our health

Over the years, there have been numerous complaints and alerts regarding the high toxicity of glyphosate . This poison has been found in food and hygiene products despite the fact that even the media have warned that it is a carcinogenic chemical. But what really is glyphosate? Do some products really contain it despite its high toxicity?

What is glyphosate?

Glyphosate is a herbicide that was created in 1970 by Monsanto , an American multinational producer of agrochemicals and biotechnology for agriculture. It was in this year that he began to develop genetically modified crops (GMOs) designed to withstand high doses of herbicides. This in particular is used to eliminate plants that alter ecosystems , although in many cases it is used to directly prevent the growth of weeds .

It is also very common to use it in some of the stages of sowing, in drying some plants, maintaining gardens or even spraying sidewalks in cities.

What health problems can it cause?

There are those who claim that glyphosate, if used in a controlled manner, has no negative effects on the environment and that it is not harmful to the health of animals and people. However, the WHO assured that there is evidence to the contrary and that it can cause cancer in both animals and people . A Greenpeace report also warns that products containing glyphosate can cause, in addition to cancer, reproductive and neurological problems. And, through scientific studies, they showed that it has a high capacity to cause mitochondrial damage, necrosis, endocrine alterations and cell death in embryonic and placental cells.

To all this should also be added the negative impact on the environment because it could contaminate surface and groundwater, which could harm wildlife and end drinking water.
